Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine SPECT Imaging

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging uses a dual head gamma nuclear imaging camera to produce images of the biological processes in your body. SPECT scans allow your doctor to see things such as small breast tumors, whether your bones are healing from trauma (such as trauma caused by cancer), and help your doctor determine how your heart is functioning (also known as a MUGA scan). Our SPECT scan cameras are very quiet, and our patients do not typically experience claustrophobia while being scanned.

Available at our Corpus Christi location.

16 Slice PET

A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a form of nuclear imaging that provides a 3D image or map of the processes and structures in the body. PET scans detect pairs of gamma rays emitted indirectly by positron-emitting tracers. They are very similar to CT scans, with the primary difference being that PET scans also allow the doctor to see the functional as well as structural views of the body and its organs. With this imaging technology, doctors can tell how an organ is functioning and whether it has been damaged. Common PET scans include those of the brain and the full body.

Available at our Corpus Christi location.

Multislice CT

Computerized Tomography (CT or CAT) scans are non-invasive and combine the use of X-ray equipment with computers to produce multiple, precise images of the inside of the body. Our Corpus Christi scanner is a 16 slice machine, which means it produces 16 sections for each image taken. The Houston location features a 4 slice scan. CT scans of organs, bones, tissue and blood vessels are helpful in diagnosing illness because they provide more detailed images than traditional X-rays.

Available at our Corpus Christi and Houston locations.

Cardiac Testing

Echocardiogram (EKG/ECG)

An echocardiogram, also known as an EKG or ECG, uses electrode sensors on your chest to record to turn your heart rhythm into a line graph on the screen. These results will show your doctor the rhythm and strength of your heartbeats, in order to detect potential conditions like arrhythmias or artery blockage, or to check on how well heart disease treatments are working.

Available at our Corpus Christi, Houston, and Nashville locations.

Cardiac Stress Test Echocardiogram

A stress electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) allows your doctor to check for changes in your heart while under stress. The heart is a muscle that works harder when you exercise than it does when you are resting. Therefore, some abnormalities can only be seen under these conditions. A stress EKG test translates your heart’s electrical activity into line tracings, and the spikes and dips shown can then be read by a cardiologist. We are proud to work with The Heart Place to provide your doctor with detailed interpretations of our exams.

Available at our Corpus Christi and McAllen locations.

Vascular Ultrasound Echocardiogram with Doppler

Vascular ultrasound is performed to help monitor the blood flow to organs and tissues throughout the body, locate and identify blockages (stenosis) and abnormalities like plaque or emboli, and help plan for their effective treatment. This cardiovascular scan employs a small, hand-held microphone to send sound waves into the body. These sound waves are then recorded, converted to moving pictures on a monitor, and measured. The exam is capable of detecting blood clots (deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in the major veins of the legs or arms, determine whether a patient is a good candidate for a procedure such as angioplasty, evaluate the success of procedures that graft or bypass blood vessels, determine if there is an enlarged artery (aneurysm), and point out the source and severity of varicose veins. We are proud to work in conjunction with The Heart Place to provide you and your doctor with detailed interpretations of our exams.

Nuclear Stress Testing

Similarly to a cardiac stress test echocardiogram, nuclear stress testing is performed while you perform exercise. But rather than measuring your heart rhythms, this test measures the volume of blood flow to all the areas of your heart. If heart muscle is damaged, the test can detect this lower blood flow. Because the heart works harder when you’re active, this exercise stress test is more effective at detecting issues than one where you are at rest.

Thallium/Cardiolite Scan

This nuclear perfusion scan is an imaging study of the heart where you get an injection of thallium or Cardiolite. These substances attach to heart muscle, which helps to visualize areas of lower blood flow due to issues like blocked arteries. Your doctor may prescribe this scan if he or she suspects blockages, if you have had treatment for angina or myocardial infarction, and to assess heart muscle viability, to determine whether stenting, or bypass procedures may be necessary.

Available at our Corpus Christi location.

Other Exams

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Neurons, or brain cells, send electrical signals to communicate. These signals are measured in an electroencephalogram (EEG) in order to assess issues with neuron messaging. Your doctor may order the EEG test to detect or rule out disorders like seizures, encephalitis, brain tumor, stroke, and others. To perform this test, our specialist places electrode sensors on your scalp. The results, which look like wavy lines on a chart, can be interpreted in detail by your physician.

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

In our spirometry pulmonary function test, you breathe into a mouthpiece attached to a machine that measures several important aspects of your respiration, including lung capacity, lung volume, rate of airflow, and expiratory volume. The test is capable of detecting obstructive or restrictive respiratory lung disorders, including asthma and bronchitis, or to test for the possibility of environmental exposures affecting the function of your lungs. It may also be used during lung disease treatment, to monitor treatment progress.

Available at our Corpus Christi, Houston, McAllen, and Nashville locations.

Polysomnography in True Medical’s Sleep Lab

True Medical offers comfortable sleep labs, where you may spend the night if your doctor orders a sleep study, or polysomnogram, to detect a potential sleep disorder. During this overnight exam, our specialists place sticky electrode sensors on your body, hooked up to a machine that tracks various biological functions like eye movement, brain waves, and heartbeat throughout the night. Together, these records can help your doctor to piece together a diagnosis to explain sleep problems. During the test, our staff will ensure that you have everything you need and that your exam is as relaxing as possible.

Available at our Corpus Christi, McAllen, and Nashville locations.
